B.Sc. Agriculture Students Visit National Sugar Institute, Kanpur for Practical Industry Exposure and Learning

Students Gain Practical Insights into Sugar Technology, Ethanol Production, and Value-Added By-products through Industry Interaction
The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Allied Industries (FASAI), Rama University organized an industrial visit to the National Sugar Institute (NSI), Kanpur for the students of B.Sc. (Agriculture) on 24 August, 2026. The visit was planned with the objective of providing practical exposure to the sugar industry and enhancing student’s understanding of sugarcane processing, industrial technologies, ethanol production, quality standards, and the utilization of sugar industry by-products.
The educational tour commenced with the best wishes of Dr. Aneeta Yadav, Dean, FASAI, who encouraged the students to make the most of the industrial exposure and apply the knowledge gained during the visit in their academic and professional careers. Students visited various laboratories and processing units, where they observed modern technologies used in sugar manufacturing, quality control, and by-product utilization.
During the technical interaction, Dr. Soma Kundu delivered an informative session on the biochemistry of sugar and explained the scientific processes involved in alcohol and ethanol production from sugarcane. She discussed the industrial importance of ethanol as a value-added product and highlighted the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specifications related to sugar and its by-products. Her session helped students understand the role of quality standards, chemical composition, and biochemical processes in ensuring efficient sugar production and product quality.
The students also attended an expert session by Dr. Mohit Kumar, who explained the functions of different units in a sugar industry and the technologies employed at each stage of processing. He provided detailed insights into the sugarcane procurement strategy, the complete sugar production system, and the operational workflow followed in modern sugar mills. He further elaborated on the utilization of bagasse for electricity generation and discussed the manufacturing of various value-added by-products, demonstrating how the sugar industry efficiently converts waste into useful resources and contributes to sustainable industrial practices. The industrial visit provided students with a comprehensive understanding of the technical, scientific, and commercial aspects of the sugar industry. The exposure to real-time industrial operations helped bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical applications, while also introducing students to emerging career opportunities in sugar technology, ethanol production, quality assurance, research, and agro-based industries.
The students expressed their gratitude to the university administration and faculty coordinators for organizing such an enriching industrial visit, which broadened their practical knowledge of sugar manufacturing and its allied industries.
