BIS Startups Meet From Innovation to impact

Introduction
A group of students from the Faculty of Commerce and Management, Rama University, along with a faculty coordinator, participated in the BIS–Startups Meet held at IIT Kanpur on 26 June 2025. The workshop, jointly organized by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and IIT Kanpur, aimed to foster interaction between academia, startups, and regulatory bodies by highlighting the importance of standardization in promoting innovation, compliance, and quality assurance.
Objective of the Event
The primary aim of the workshop was to showcase how Indian Standards can empower startups and innovators by offering guidelines that ensure product safety, consistency, and acceptance in national and global markets. It also focused on building collaborations between BIS and academic institutions to create awareness and integrate standardization into academic and entrepreneurial initiatives.

- Inaugural address by Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, Director General, BIS, emphasizing the role of standards in strengthening the innovation ecosystem
- Presentation on the startup ecosystem at IIT Kanpur by Prof. Deepu Philip, Professor-in-Charge, SIIC, IIT Kanpur.
- Overview of BIS’s mandate, structure, and startup relevance by Shri Aditya Das, H(ETD)
- Demonstration of digital platforms and academic dashboards by Shri Kshitij Bathla, Sc. D(LITD)
- Insights on BIS–startup collaboration by Shri Asit Kumar Maharana, H(ETD)

Observations and Learnings
- The event highlighted the strategic importance of incorporating standardization at early stages of product and business development.
- Participants learned how BIS facilitates startups in aligning with regulatory compliance through Quality Control Orders (QCOs) and certification schemes.
- Academic institutions were encouraged to contribute to the development and review of Indian Standards.
- Students gained exposure to real-world application of BIS standards in innovation-driven sectors and understood their relevance in enhancing product credibility and competitiveness.
Conclusion
The BIS–Startups Meet provided valuable insights into how standardization, quality assurance, and compliance play a key role in innovation, entrepreneurship, and academic research. The sessions helped bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical implementation, especially in emerging tech sectors. The event also reinforced the need for closer collaboration between regulatory bodies and academic institutions to nurture a quality-driven innovation culture.
