The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences organized, “World Pharmacist Day-2026,” with great enthusiasm and participation from students and faculty members. The event served as a platform to celebrate the vital role of pharmacists in healthcare while promoting awareness about responsible medication use and public health.
Event objective
World Pharmacist Day is celebrated globally every year on 25th September to recognize and highlight the vital contributions of pharmacists to healthcare and community well-being. The occasion provides an opportunity to acknowledge the significant role of pharmacists in promoting safe and rational use of medicines, ensuring medication safety, supporting patient care, and strengthening public health.
The theme for World Pharmacist Day 2026 was “Empowering Pharmacists for Healthier Futures,” with the sub-theme “Swastha Bharat: Combating Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).” The theme emphasized the importance of empowering pharmacists to contribute effectively to a healthier society, while the sub-theme focused attention on the growing global challenge of antimicrobial resistance.
The celebration played an important role in generating awareness and knowledge regarding Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) among students and the wider community. It highlighted the responsible use of antimicrobial medicines and emphasized the role of pharmacists in promoting appropriate antimicrobial therapy, educating patients, preventing misuse and overuse of antibiotics, and contributing to efforts aimed at reducing the development and spread of antimicrobial resistance.
The event also provided an opportunity for students to understand the expanding responsibilities of pharmacists beyond the dispensing of medicines. Through various awareness and educational activities, the programme emphasized the pharmacist’s role as an important healthcare professional in patient education, medication safety, antimicrobial stewardship, disease prevention, and community health promotion.
The celebration of World Pharmacist Day 2026 thus served as a meaningful platform to recognize the contributions of pharmacists and inspire future pharmacy professionals to actively participate in building a healthier and more responsible community.
Event Highlights
The programme commenced with an Awareness Rally, followed by a Nukkad Natak (street play) presented by the students at a central location on the campus. These activities were organized with the objective of spreading awareness among students and the wider campus community about the pivotal role of pharmacists in promoting safe and rational use of medicines. Through the Street play, students effectively highlighted the responsibilities of pharmacists in advising patients on the appropriate use of medications, promoting medication safety, preventing and identifying Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs), and addressing the growing concern of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). The performance conveyed these important healthcare messages in an informative, creative, and engaging manner.
The celebration of World Pharmacist Day 2026 formally inaugurated with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, symbolizing the dispelling of darkness and the illumination of knowledge, wisdom, and learning. The lighting ceremony also represented the commitment of the pharmacy profession towards spreading knowledge and contributing to advancements in healthcare and patient well-being. The ceremony was held at the Auditorium Hall of Rama University in the esteemed presence of the chief guest Dr. Sri Sivakumar, Professor, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Laboratory, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, Dr. Janardhana A.B.J., Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Abhishek Gupta (Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical sciences) along with other distinguished dignitaries, Deans, faculty members, and students.
Adding a vibrant cultural dimension to the inaugural ceremony, the students of D. Pharm First Year presented a mesmerizing Ganesh Vandana dance performance. The graceful presentation expressed devotion to Lord Ganesha, the symbol of wisdom and auspicious beginnings, and set an inspiring and positive tone for the celebrations.
The ceremony commenced with a formal welcome extended by the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences to the keynote speaker, Dr. Sri Sivakumar, Professor at IIT Kanpur's Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Laboratory. The session provided faculty and students with an opportunity to engage in academic discourse with a leading authority in the field.
The event started with a celebration emphasizing the vital contributions of pharmacists and their expanding role in modern healthcare. Delivering the welcome address, Prof. (Dr.) Abhishek Gupta, Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, greeted the assembled dignitaries, faculty, and students, setting a constructive and motivating tone for the day's program.
In his address, he highlighted the significant role of pharmacists in healthcare and the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). He emphasized the importance of empowering pharmacists with knowledge, skills, and professional competencies to contribute effectively to patient care and public health.
He also acknowledged the dedication, commitment, and hard work of pharmacists in strengthening healthcare systems and emphasized the need for pharmacists to play an active role in promoting the rational use of medicines and combating antimicrobial resistance. His address closely reflected the theme of World Pharmacist Day 2026, “Empowering Pharmacists for Healthier Futures,” and its focus on “Swastha Bharat: Combating Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).”
Followed by the welcome address, the keynote speaker, Dr. Sri Sivakumar delivered his lecture which included “Microfabricated Liver-on-a-Chip with Membrane-Free Endothelial–Hepatic Interface for Long-Term Culture and Drug-Induced Liver Injury Modelling”. The session highlighted how the field is shifting toward precision pharmacology. The development of a membrane-free endothelial–hepatic micro-interface provides a physiological biomimetic model for long-term drug toxicity screening. This advancement underscores the critical impact of pharmaceutical researchers in driving safer drug development pipelines and safer patient care.
The ceremony was followed by a series of engaging cultural and awareness activities presented by the students. Group dance performances by both boys and girls added vibrancy and enthusiasm to the celebrations, showcasing the students’ creativity and talent.
A meaningful skit was also presented by the students, highlighting the important role of pharmacists in combating and reducing antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
