The initiative aimed to bridge academic learning with practical ethical decision-making while encouraging students to develop critical thinking, ethical reasoning, teamwork, persuasive communication, and public speaking skills.
Promoting Ethical Awareness in Business
The event was conceptualized to develop ethical awareness among future business professionals and help students understand the wider responsibilities of organizations towards their stakeholders.
Through case-based courtroom trials, students examined how business decisions can create ethical, social, and professional implications. The activity encouraged participants to look beyond profitability and consider issues of fairness, transparency, accountability, consumer rights, employee welfare, and responsible business practices.
Twelve Teams, One Courtroom of Ideas
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students pursuing MBA, BBA, and B.Com programmes, with a total of 12 teams competing in the courtroom-style activity.
Each trial featured two teams representing the Prosecution and Defense, who presented structured arguments based on contemporary business ethics case studies. The cases addressed important corporate challenges, including:
- Gig economy labour and worker rights
- Corporate transparency and accountability
- Consumer rights and protection
- Responsible business practices
- Ethical decision-making in corporate environments
The participants presented their arguments before the judging panel and responded to questions posed by the judges, creating an engaging and intellectually stimulating courtroom environment.
Evaluation Based on Knowledge & Argumentation
The participating teams were evaluated on multiple parameters, including their understanding of the case, ethical reasoning, research and analysis, clarity and strength of arguments, communication skills, and overall team coordination.
A panel of faculty judges carefully assessed each performance and provided constructive feedback to the participants. Their observations helped students understand the importance of presenting balanced, well-researched, and logically structured arguments while considering different ethical perspectives.
Recognising Excellence
The competition concluded with the announcement of the Best Team and Runner-Up Team, based on the scores awarded by the judging panel. The Best Speaker Award was also presented to the participant who demonstrated exceptional argumentation, confidence, communication, and presentation skills during the trials.
The recognition motivated students to further develop their professional communication and ethical decision-making abilities.
A Platform for Experiential Learning
The Ethical Business Trial provided students with an opportunity to move beyond conventional classroom learning and engage with complex business situations through an interactive and practical format.
The activity strengthened students’ abilities in critical analysis, ethical reasoning, public speaking, teamwork, decision-making, and persuasive communication. It also encouraged them to appreciate the importance of responsible conduct in modern corporate environments.
