FJS Spreads Awareness Against Tobacco Use
The Faculty of Juridical Sciences at Rama University, Kanpur, held a Legal Awareness Programme on “Say No to Tobacco” on 27 May 2025 at Rama Ayurvedic Medical College & Hospital from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The programme aimed to inform students about the harmful effects of tobacco use and to raise awareness about the legal, social, and health issues tied to tobacco consumption. The session stressed the importance of preventive steps, public responsibility, and legal knowledge in dealing with tobacco addiction and encouraging a healthy, tobacco-free lifestyle.
Participants learned about various laws and regulations related to tobacco control in India, especially the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 (COTPA) and important rules under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. These laws ban the use of tobacco and nicotine in foods, like gutka and pan masala. The session also covered the State's duty to improve public health under Article 47 of the Constitution of India.
The programme further emphasized key judicial actions, such as the Supreme Court of India’s decision in Murli S. Deora v. Union of India. This ruling banned smoking in public places to protect non-smokers from secondhand smoke and to support the right to life and health under Article 21 of the Constitution of India.
Dr. Kaneez Fatima and Mr. Maneesh Srivastava, both Assistant Professors at FJS, coordinated the programme. Around 100 students took part and gained valuable insights from the awareness session.
The event ended with a call for students to help build a healthier, responsible, and tobacco-free society through awareness, legal adherence, and social commitment.
