The World Breastfeeding Week 2026 celebration commenced on 1st August 2026, highlighting the vital importance of breastfeeding in ensuring the health, nutrition, and survival of infants while promoting the well-being of mothers. Observed globally every year from 1st to 7th August, World Breastfeeding Week aims to create awareness about the numerous health, emotional, and social benefits of breastfeeding. It encourages exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, followed by continued breastfeeding along with appropriate complementary feeding, thereby contributing significantly to the achievement of national and global health goals.
To mark the inaugural day of this important global campaign, the Faculty of Nursing, Rama University, Kanpur, in collaboration with community wellness club organized a meaningful and academically enriching programme to promote awareness regarding breastfeeding among nursing students. The event was conducted from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the seminar hall and brought together 200 students and faculty members in an atmosphere of learning, enthusiasm, and active participation.
The World Breastfeeding Week programme was organized under the esteemed guidance of Dean and Principal, Prof. Dr. Jasmi Johnson, and Vice Principal, Dr. Minu S.R., with the collaborative efforts of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Nursing and the Department of Child Health Nursing. The programme commenced with an introductory session highlighting the significance of World Breastfeeding Week, followed by the traditional lamp-lighting ceremony. The gathering was warmly welcomed by Dr. Minu S.R. Vice Principal, after which Prof. Dr. Jasmi Johnson, Dean cum Principal, delivered the inaugural keynote address. In her address, she emphasized the importance of breastfeeding as the foundation of lifelong health, its role in reducing infant morbidity and mortality, strengthening maternal health, and supporting sustainable development by ensuring every child receives the best possible start in life.
To transform theoretical knowledge into active learning, the faculty organized an interactive Quiz Competition aimed at assessing and enhancing students' understanding of maternal and neonatal health practices related to breastfeeding. The programme was efficiently moderated by Mrs. Agnes Mahima David, while the quiz competition was conducted by Ms. Rashmi and Ms. Astha.
A total of 12 teams, comprising students from ANM First Year, ANM Second Year, and GNM Third Year, enthusiastically participated in the competition. The event consisted of a preliminary round followed by a final round. The quiz included multiple-choice questions covering important topics such as the physiology of lactation, correct infant positioning and attachment, the immunological benefits of colostrum, exclusive breastfeeding recommendations, the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, and the management of common breastfeeding challenges. The participants displayed excellent knowledge, confidence, and keen interest throughout the competition, reflecting their commitment to maternal and child health and the promotion of evidence-based nursing practice.
At the conclusion Constructive feedback was provided to all participants, encouraging them to continue expanding their knowledge and skills in breastfeeding promotion and counselling.
The inaugural programme of World Breastfeeding Week 2026 was a grand success, effectively raising awareness about the importance of breastfeeding among future nursing professionals. The event reaffirmed the commitment of the Faculty of Nursing, Rama University, Kanpur, to promoting maternal and child health through education, advocacy, and community awareness. The programme inspired students to become dedicated ambassadors for breastfeeding promotion and to contribute meaningfully towards improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes in society.
