FJS Organized HIV and Injecting Drug Use Awareness Programme - A Collaborative Initiative of Rama University, Kanpur and GSVM, Kanpur

As part of its collaborative academic and social outreach initiatives, the Faculty of Juridical Sciences (FJS), Rama University, Kanpur, in collaboration with GSVM Medical College & Hospital, Kanpur, organised an HIV and Injecting Drug Use Awareness Programme on 18 September 2026 at the Seminar Hall, VC Building.
The programme aimed to enhance awareness among students regarding HIV prevention, transmission, treatment, and the health and social consequences associated with injecting drug use. It also highlighted the importance of responsible behaviour, stigma reduction, and access to appropriate healthcare services.

The awareness session was delivered by:
- Dr. Mani Ratanam, Senior Medical Officer, ART Centre, GSVM, Kanpur
- Dr. Amit Kumar Porwal, Medical Officer, OST Centre, GSVM, Kanpur
The session was organised under the direction of Dr. Praveen Kumar Mall, Dean, Faculty of Juridical Sciences, Rama University, Kanpur.
The resource persons sensitised the students on:
- Basic concepts of HIV/AIDS, its modes of transmission and prevention.
- Health risks associated with injecting drug use.
- Importance of early testing, diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
- Role of ART (Antiretroviral Therapy) in HIV management.
- Importance of OST (Opioid Substitution Therapy) in addressing opioid dependence.
- Prevention strategies and responsible health practices.
- Need to reduce stigma and discrimination against persons living with HIV.
- Importance of seeking timely medical advice and accessing appropriate healthcare services.
The interactive session provided students with an opportunity to clarify their queries and understand the medical, social and legal dimensions associated with HIV and drug use.
The programme enabled students to:
- Understand the basic causes, transmission and prevention of HIV.
- Recognise the health risks associated with injecting drug use.
- Develop awareness about available treatment and rehabilitation services.
- Understand the importance of reducing stigma and discrimination.
- Develop a sense of social responsibility towards vulnerable and affected communities.
The HIV and Injecting Drug Use Awareness Programme was a meaningful academic and community-oriented initiative that contributed to increasing students' awareness of public health concerns and social responsibility. The collaborative engagement between FJS, Rama University, and GSVM Medical College & Hospital, Kanpur strengthened the University's commitment to experiential learning, community outreach and socially relevant legal education.
