World Heart Day is celebrated to raise global awareness of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) like heart attacks and strokes, highlighting that many are preventable through lifestyle changes. Established by the World Heart Federation, it aims to unite individuals, communities, and governments to take action, promote heart-healthy behaviors, and advocate for policies that improve heart health worldwide. The Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing, Faculty of Nursing, Rama University, Kanpur, organized an Extension Outreach Programme(The heart health awareness campaign) on the occasion of “World Heart Day” to promote cardiovascular health awareness. The programme aimed to educate the rural community on preventive measures, early detection, and healthy lifestyle modifications to reduce the burden of heart diseases.
OBJECTIVES OF THE EVENT
- To create awareness among the rural community about cardiovascular health and the importance of early prevention.
- To screen villagers for hypertension through free Blood Pressure monitoring and identify individuals at risk.
- To educate the community on lifestyle modifications such as healthy diet, regular exercise, stress reduction, and avoidance of smoking/alcohol.
The programme commenced at 10:00 am with the arrival of faculty members, students, and villagers at the venue. The event was formally inaugurated with a welcome address by the Mrs. Niladrita deb, Associate professor, dept of MSN,The Village Pradhan graced the occasion and delivered a brief speech highlighting the importance of heart health and appreciated the efforts of the Faculty of Nursing in bringing such awareness programmes to the rural community. The gathering was further addressed by faculty members who emphasized the relevance of World Heart Day and the theme “Don’t Miss a Beat”.
- Blood Pressure (B.P) Monitoring: Free BP check-ups were conducted to identify individuals at risk of hypertension.
- Role Play: An interactive skit highlighting lifestyle risks, symptoms, and prevention of cardiac diseases.
- Health Education: Talks on balanced diet, exercise, smoking cessation, stress management, and regular check-ups.
- Handout Distribution: Informative leaflets in simple language for easy community understanding and recall.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS OF THE EVENT:
- villagers actively participated in the campaign.
- Many individuals underwent BP monitoring, with few identified as hypertensive and referred for medical follow-up.
- Role play attracted maximum attention, making health concepts easy to understand for all age groups.
- Women participants showed keen interest in lifestyle changes for family health.
- Distribution of handouts ensured the sustainability of health messages beyond the event.
- Positive community feedback indicating improved understanding of heart health.
The villagers of Bhavanipur showed enthusiastic participation. Many came forward for health check-ups, asked questions, and engaged with the role play and educational sessions. The outreach programme effectively raised awareness about heart health among the rural population. The initiative not only benefitted the community but also provided nursing students with valuable learning experience. The campaign strongly resonated with the World Heart Day 2025 theme, “Don’t Miss a Beat”, emphasizing early prevention and proactive heart care.
