Nursing Students Lead Powerful Rally to Transform Community Awareness on AIDS Prevention

World AIDS Day is observed every year on 1st December to unite communities and raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. The global theme for 2025, “Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response,” emphasizes building resilience, addressing service gaps, and strengthening public awareness after disruptions caused by pandemics, conflict, and social barriers. To support this cause, the Department of AHN, Faculty of Nursing organized a Health Promotion Rally to educate about HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and the need to eliminate stigma, especially in challenging times.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME:
- To create awareness about HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention.
- To highlight the importance of uninterrupted HIV services despite social or health disruptions.
- To encourage community participation in the global fight against AIDS.
- To promote early testing, adherence to treatment, and stigma-free attitudes.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS OF THE EVENT:
The rally commenced with an inauguration session by Respected principal Faculty of Nursing Dr .Jasmi Johnson along with all the faculties at 10.30am from Rama college of Nursing to Kukradev village with an introductory briefing about the theme by Mrs. K. Jyothisree, Associate professor cum HOD of AHN Department The rally was graced by the presence of Respected Nursing Dean prof. Dr. Jasmi Johnson and Vice principal Prof. Dr. Minu S.R. distinguished HOD’s from various departments .Over 100 participants, including students and faculty joined the event. participants were wearing red ribbons to symbolize solidarity.
Participants carried banners with messages like“ Stop AIDS, Keep the Promise ”and chanted slogans such as “fight with the disease not with the diseased ”and “End Stigma, Support Life” to draw public attention .A street play (Nukkad Natak) was performed by GNM 2nd year students highlighted the challenges faced by individuals living with HIV .Local people gathered to listen to short awareness talks delivered by the students. The World AIDS Day Rally was a meaningful initiative to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS and promote community involvement.
HIV is preventable and manageable with timely treatment. Interruptions in health services must not stop individuals from accessing ART and care. The enthusiasm of participants and the positive response from the public highlighted the power of collective action in addressing global health challenges. The rally successfully raised awareness among the local community, with many stopping to watch the performances and ask questions. It reinforced the importance of early diagnosis, safe practices, and empathy toward individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Participants pledged to contribute to spreading awareness and supporting HIV-related initiatives in their respective communities.
The World AIDS Day Health Promotion Rally on the theme “Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response” was highly effective in spreading awareness and motivating the community. The rally helped bridge knowledge gaps, reduce stigma, and empower individuals to access uninterrupted HIV services. Such initiatives play a crucial role in strengthening the AIDS response at the community level.
