Project Monsoon Showcases Automated Rain Detection Through IoT, Robotics, Sensors, and Innovative Prototyping

The Smart Mech Circle Club, FET, Rama University organized an innovative hands-on activity titled “Project Monsoon: Designing & Prototyping an Automated Rain Detection System.” The activity provided students with an opportunity to explore the practical application of Robotics, IoT, sensors, and automation through the development of a functional prototype.
The project focused on designing a smart rain detection system aimed at protecting clothes from unexpected rainfall. The prototype uses a rain sensor to detect water droplets, which sends a signal to the controller. Based on the detected signal, a servo motor automatically moves the clothesline/cover to protect the clothes. An LED indicator is also incorporated to show the system status.
Hands-on Learning & Innovation
The activity introduced students to the fundamentals of an IoT-based automated system and helped them understand how sensors, controllers, motors, and electronic components can work together to solve everyday problems. The presentation also introduced students to common components used in IoT and robotics kits, including microcontrollers such as Arduino/ESP32, motors, sensors, Wi-Fi modules, wires, and batteries.
Through the project, students gained practical exposure to problem identification, system design, prototyping, sensor-based automation, and technology-driven solution development. The activity encouraged students to think creatively and apply their technical knowledge to a real-life situation.
