Introduction

The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Rama Medical College, Hospital & Research Centre, Kanpur, organized a World Breastfeeding Week 2026 Celebration on 7th August 2026 to promote awareness regarding the importance of breastfeeding and its vital role in ensuring a healthy and sustainable start to life.

The programme was conducted in accordance with the theme “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works.” The event focused on strengthening awareness among mothers, students, nursing staff and healthcare professionals regarding the benefits of breastfeeding, appropriate breastfeeding practices and the role of healthcare workers in supporting and promoting breastfeeding.

Objectives of the Programme

The major objectives of the programme were:

• To create awareness regarding the importance and benefits of breastfeeding.
• To promote early initiation and appropriate breastfeeding practices.
• To educate mothers regarding the nutritional, immunological and developmental benefits of breastfeeding.
• To strengthen the role of healthcare professionals in breastfeeding counselling and support.
• To engage medical and nursing students in breastfeeding awareness activities.
• To address common misconceptions and encourage evidence-based breastfeeding practices.
• To reinforce the importance of breastfeeding for maternal and child health and sustainable development.

Activities Conducted

A. Breastfeeding Awareness and Counselling

As part of the World Breastfeeding Week activities, breastfeeding awareness and counselling were provided to mothers in the Labour Room. Mothers were educated regarding the importance of breastfeeding and appropriate breastfeeding practices.

B. Poster Competition

A poster competition was organized for MBBS students and interns. Students prepared informative and creative posters highlighting various aspects of breastfeeding and maternal-child health.

The posters were evaluated on the basis of content, creativity, relevance and presentation.

C. Educational Drama

The main programme included an informative and engaging drama performed by nursing students highlighting the importance of breastfeeding. The presentation effectively conveyed key breastfeeding messages in an interactive and easy-to-understand manner.

D. Educational Seminar

A seminar on breastfeeding awareness was delivered by PG JR-1 of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology. The session focused on important clinical and practical aspects of breastfeeding and the role of healthcare professionals in supporting breastfeeding mothers.

E. Breastfeeding Awareness Quiz

A breastfeeding awareness quiz was conducted for MBBS students to assess and enhance their knowledge regarding breastfeeding, maternal health and infant nutrition. The activity encouraged active participation and learning in an engaging format.

F. Prize Distribution

The programme concluded with prize distribution to the winners of the poster competition, recognizing the creativity and efforts of the participating students.

Conclusion

The World Breastfeeding Week 2026 Celebration organized by the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology was successfully conducted with enthusiastic participation from students, nursing students, postgraduate residents, faculty members and mothers.

The combination of breastfeeding counselling, poster competition, educational drama, seminar, quiz and prize distribution provided an effective platform for spreading awareness and reinforcing the importance of breastfeeding.
