Rama University Celebrates Oral Hygiene Day 2026 with Awareness Rally, Camp and Student Competitions

The Department of Periodontology, Faculty of Dental Sciences, Rama University, Kanpur, celebrated Oral Hygiene Day 2026 on 1st August 2026 with great enthusiasm and active participation from faculty members, postgraduate students, undergraduate students, interns, and the general public. The programme was organized to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. G. B. Shankwalkar, the founder of the Indian Society of Periodontology (ISP), and to reinforce the significance of maintaining good oral hygiene for achieving optimal oral and systemic health.
The celebration commenced with the inauguration of the programme, followed by a cake-cutting ceremony to mark the occasion. Faculty members, postgraduate students, undergraduate students, and interns assembled to pay tribute to the remarkable contributions of Dr. G. B. Shankwalkar towards the advancement of Periodontology and oral healthcare in India.
The programme was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Janardhana Amaranth B. J., Professor and Head, Department of Periodontology, along with Dr. Shruti Gupta, Professor, Dr. Anishka Dhanai, Senior Lecturer, and Dr. Neebha Kumari, Senior Lecturer, Department of Periodontology.
A series of awareness activities were organized to educate the community on the importance of oral hygiene and the prevention of periodontal diseases. An Oral Health Awareness Rally was conducted within and around the university campus, where participants carried informative placards, posters, and banners displaying oral health messages. The rally effectively conveyed the importance of regular tooth brushing, healthy dietary habits, and periodic dental check-ups to the public.
To encourage creativity and oral health awareness among students, Poster Making and Slogan Writing Competitions were organized for undergraduate students. The competitions witnessed enthusiastic participation, with students presenting innovative ideas and impactful messages highlighting the prevention of periodontal diseases and the promotion of good oral hygiene practices.
As part of the community outreach programme, the department organized a Free Dental Health Camp, where comprehensive oral examinations were performed for the public. Free oral prophylaxis (professional scaling) was provided to eligible patients, and preventive oral healthcare advice was delivered by the faculty and postgraduate students.
To promote healthy oral hygiene practices, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and oral health education pamphlets were distributed free of cost to all camp beneficiaries. Faculty members and postgraduate students also demonstrated proper tooth-brushing techniques and educated patients regarding the prevention and early management of periodontal diseases.
The Oral Hygiene Day 2026 celebration successfully achieved its objective of creating awareness about the importance of oral hygiene, prevention of periodontal diseases, and the maintenance of overall oral health. The programme reflected the Department of Period ontology continued commitment to community service, preventive dentistry, and oral health promotion through education and outreach activities.
