Rama University Organizes TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan Awareness Seminar for Students and Faculty

TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan Awareness Programme
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Faculty of Professional Studies, Rama University, Kanpur, organized a seminar on “TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan” on 26 August 2026 at the Seminar Hall, VC Building, Rama University, Kanpur, as an awareness programme recommended by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The programme aimed to sensitize students and faculty members about tuberculosis (TB), its causes, symptoms, transmission, prevention, treatment, and the importance of collective efforts in realizing the vision of a TB-free India. The keynote speaker of the programme was Professor (Dr.) R. Sujatha, Principal, Medical College, Rama University, Kanpur, who delivered a highly informative and comprehensive lecture on various dimensions of tuberculosis. During her address, she explained in detail what TB is, how the disease is caused and transmitted, and the major types of tuberculosis, including pulmonary and extra-pulmonary TB. She elaborated on the common signs and symptoms of TB, such as persistent cough, fever, night sweats, weakness, loss of appetite, and unexplained weight loss, while emphasizing that timely recognition of these symptoms is essential for early diagnosis and treatment. She also explained the different ways through which TB can spread from an infected person to others, particularly through the air, and highlighted the importance of maintaining respiratory hygiene, covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing, ensuring proper ventilation, avoiding unnecessary stigma, and seeking medical consultation when symptoms persist. Professor (Dr.) Sujatha further discussed the importance of early diagnosis, appropriate medical treatment, regular medication, and completion of the prescribed treatment course, stressing that discontinuing treatment prematurely can create serious health complications and contribute to drug-resistant TB. She also highlighted the importance of nutrition, immunity, personal hygiene, awareness, and regular medical follow-up in the prevention and management of the disease. Her detailed explanation addressed several misconceptions surrounding TB and helped the participants understand that TB is a preventable and curable disease when diagnosed and treated appropriately.
The keynote lecture by Professor (Dr.) R. Sujatha proved to be the central and most enlightening component of the seminar. Her medically informed explanation provided the participants with a broader and more practical understanding of TB, covering its causes, symptoms, types, modes of transmission, risk factors, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, drug adherence, complications, and the importance of community awareness. She particularly emphasized that eliminating TB requires not only medical intervention but also awareness, responsible behaviour, early reporting of symptoms, social support, and active participation of citizens. Her lecture significantly enhanced the knowledge of all the members present in the seminar and encouraged students to act as responsible health communicators by sharing authentic information and discouraging myths and social stigma associated with tuberculosis. Students from the Departments of Law, Journalism and Mass Communication, Nursing, Agriculture, Pharmacy, Ayurveda, and Management actively participated in the programme and benefited from the expert session. Dr. Shashank from the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Sarvesh from the Faculty of Agriculture, and Dr. Manish Srivastava from the Faculty of Law were also present during the seminar. The programme was organized by Dr. Manu Kaushik, Assistant Professor, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Faculty of Professional Studies, Rama University, Kanpur, whose initiative and coordination contributed to the successful organization of the awareness programme. The interdisciplinary participation of students and faculty members created an effective environment for knowledge sharing and public-health awareness. The seminar successfully achieved its intended goal of increasing awareness about tuberculosis and the “TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan”, empowering the participants with meaningful knowledge and encouraging them to contribute towards spreading awareness, promoting early detection and treatment, reducing stigma, and supporting the collective vision of a TB-free India.
