On Day 4 of World Breastfeeding Week (August 1–7, 2025), the Faculty of Nursing, Rama University, Kanpur, organized a Community Extension & Outreach Activity in Collaboration with NSS Unit Rama University at Bhavanipur Village, aiming to raise awareness about the significance of exclusive breastfeeding among mothers, expectant mothers, and caregivers in the area. This initiative aligned closely with this year’s theme: “Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems.”
A dedicated team comprising Semester VI B.Sc. Nursing students, aided by faculty members, journeyed to Bhavanipur at 10:00 AM, arriving around 10:30 AM, and was warmly welcomed by the village Gram Pradhan, Mr. Ranjeet Pal. At 11:00 AM, the official event commenced and ran for an hour, attracting a thoughtful and engaged audience.
The outreach program featured interactive Health Talks addressing the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, proper positioning techniques, and solutions to common issues such as engorgement, sore nipples, and low milk supply. The goal was to inform and empower attendees by highlighting how breastfeeding enhances both infant immunity and maternal wellbeing.
A key highlight was a captivating role-play performed in the local dialect by the nursing students. This skit depicted prevalent community attitudes toward breastfeeding, modeled best practices, and offered practical tips in a scenario-driven format that made essential health guidance both accessible and relatable.
Following presentations, a lively Q&A session encouraged women and caregivers to voice personal concerns and clarify doubts. To build connection with younger attendees, the team distributed stationery items and chocolates, fostering a friendly and supportive atmosphere.
The feedback was deeply positive: many mothers expressed gratitude, noting that the session cleared misconceptions and boosted their confidence in initiating and sustaining exclusive breastfeeding practices. They felt better prepared to establish timely feeding routines. Meanwhile, Mr. Ranjeet Pal, the Gram Pradhan, lauded the outreach, commenting how such efforts help strengthen collaboration between educational institutions and rural communities, and welcomed continued partnerships with Rama University.
In summary, this outreach program not only elevated vital knowledge about breastfeeding but also reinforced Rama University’s NSS Unit commitment to holistic education, public health service, and community empowerment. By bridging classroom learning with real-life community needs, the NSS Unit of the university continues to advance sustainable health support at the grassroots level—one village at a time.
