World Hypertension Day is observed every year on 17th May across the globe to spread awareness regarding hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure. Hypertension is often called the “silent killer” because it usually develops without visible symptoms while gradually damaging vital organs such as the heart, brain, kidneys, and blood vessels. World Hypertension Day plays a vital role in promoting public health awareness globally. The day reminds people that hypertension is preventable and manageable through timely screening, proper treatment, and healthy lifestyle practices in the modern era, unhealthy dietary habits, physical inactivity, stress, obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, and sedentary lifestyles have significantly increased the number of people suffering from hypertension. To mark the occasion of World Hypertension Day–2026, the Department of Medical Surgical Nursing, Rama University, Mandhana, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh organized a Health Awareness Camp and Blood Pressure Monitoring Program with the active participation of nursing students and faculty members. The programme aimed to educate the community regarding the prevention, early detection, and management of hypertension. The event was conducted with great enthusiasm and dedication. Nursing students interacted with the public, explained the importance of regular blood pressure monitoring, guided individuals regarding healthy lifestyle modifications, and motivated people to adopt preventive health practices. The programme reflected the commitment of Rama University towards community health promotion and preventive healthcare services.
The programme began with a formal inauguration by respected faculty members and students. The importance of World Hypertension Day and the significance of community awareness were highlighted during the opening session. Faculty members motivated students to actively participate in health promotion activities and emphasized the role of nurses in preventive healthcare. A free blood pressure screening camp was organized as the major activity of the programme. Measured blood pressure of participants, Recorded findings systematically, identified individuals with elevated blood pressure, provided counseling regarding further medical consultation when required. The screening activity helped many participants become aware of their blood pressure status for the first time. The camp promoted the message that regular monitoring is essential for early detection and prevention of complications. Individual counseling sessions were conducted for participants. Participants were encouraged to maintain a healthy lifestyle and undergo regular health check-ups. The nursing students played an active and responsible role throughout the programme with the community people. The students organized awareness materials, conducted blood pressure assessment, educated community members & guided participants during the camp The programme enhanced their practical knowledge and community nursing skills.
The celebration of World Hypertension Day–2026 organized by the Department of Medical Surgical Nursing, Rama University, Mandhana, Kanpur was highly successful and meaningful. The Health Awareness Camp and Blood Pressure Monitoring Programme effectively spread awareness regarding hypertension and emphasized the importance of regular blood pressure monitoring to defeat the “silent killer.” The programme created a positive impact on the community by encouraging healthy lifestyle practices and preventive healthcare measures. It also provided valuable learning opportunities for nursing students to develop professional competencies, communication skills, and community service attitudes. The event concluded with a message that collective efforts, health awareness, regular screening, and lifestyle modifications are essential to control hypertension and promote a healthier society.
