Traditional classroom teaching alone cannot motivate every student. Given that children love entertainment, inspirational movies are an effective and easy medium to motivate them. Movies have been, and still, are the best source of inspiration for all age groups including students. There are many inspirational movies that force us to think outside the box, evoke powerful emotions, and challenge us to push our limits and become better people.

1. Dead poets society (1989)

Robin Williams is on top form as the iconoclastic John Keating, the unconventional English teacher who uses his love of poetry and classic literature to break down barriers at the oppressive Welton Academy. Keating inspires his young charges to ‘seize the day, challenge the school’s strict rules, and truly be themselves.
The film is packed with emotionally-charged, touching scenes but the one that won’t fail to make the hairs on your arm stand up is the one where Keating’s students demonstrate what he means to them.
2. The Theory of Everything (2014)

This movie is the life story of one of the greatest scientists in the history of mankind – Stephen Hawking. It will take you through a roller coaster ride of emotion and euphoria as actor Eddie Redmayne plays Hawking superbly. The Theory of Everything is a wonderful tribute to Hawking’s achievements and makes you feel good despite his tragic medical condition. The movie motivates you to be hopeful and persevere through it all.
3. With Honors (1994)

This movie is about living a simple yet rich and meaningful life. If you feel that there is more to life than just getting good grades, this movie points the way to what truly matters.
In this movie, an ambitious graduate student who is about to complete his thesis meets a homeless man living in the boiler room of one of the buildings on campus. The student loses his thesis and the homeless man finds it.
They make a deal that the homeless man will return one page of the thesis for every favor the graduate student does for him. Along the way, the student and his friends learn valuable lessons that ensure they will graduate life with honors.
4. Good will hunting (1997)

For most of us, there comes a point in our lives when we don’t know what we really want to do. Will Hunting, a 19-year-old Janitor at MIT who dealt with a rough past goes through the same conundrum. He fails to recognize his potential until he meets Professor Lambeau, a maths teacher at MIT, who recognizes will’s talent for solving advanced mathematics problems. Lambeau sends him to Sean Maguire, a psychiatrist who assists him in understanding the importance of emotions and teaches him about life and love.
5. Blind Side (2009)

Standing at the 9th spot of our Motivational Movies for Students, the Blind Side is a story of an African-American homeless boy whose life takes a turn when he is adopted by an American family. Not only does he battles consistently with his learning disabilities with the help of his family but he also ultimately makes it to the all-American football team thus breaking the stereotype against foster families.
6. The pursuit of happiness (2006)

This movie gives you a dose of courage to take on what life’s dishing out.
It tells the story of a down-and-out father whose life is deteriorating before his eyes. However, he doesn’t give up. Instead, he perseveres until he comes out on top.The movie is based on the life of American businessman Chris Gardner. In the 1980s, Gardner experienced homelessness while raising his toddler son, Christopher, Jr.
Despite all the challenges, Gardner succeeded in building a strong foundation for his professional ventures.The movie is a powerful reminder that we should pursue whatever makes us happy. This will be different for each person, but the pursuit of these dreams is as important as reaching your goal.
7. Freedom Writers (2007)

Coming in under the radar in 2007, this film tells a true and inspirational story based on the success of Erin Gruwell, a teacher who came up with a unique style of teaching that took a group of underachieving inner-city kids to the heights of academic achievement.
Erin is played by Hilary Swank, who does an impressive job of portraying a woman with a single-minded drive and passion for education. It’s wonderful to see how the lives and fortunes of her class are completely turned around when they finally get into studying.
8. The great debaters (2007)

Thinking of teaching or training others? This movie is the dramatic retelling of the true story of Melvin B. Tolson, a professor who inspired his students to challenge Harvard at the debating championship
This is a heart-warming tale to lift the study spirits of the students, especially if they have been inspired at some point by a wonderful teacher who saw their potential.
