Introduction: Importance of Blood Donation
Blood donation is a vital act of service that has the power to save countless lives. One unit of donated blood can benefit multiple patients by separating it into components such as red blood cells, plasma, and platelets. It plays a crucial role in medical emergencies, surgeries, and the treatment of patients suffering from anemia, cancer, or blood disorders. Regular voluntary blood donation not only supports the healthcare system but also fosters a spirit of compassion, responsibility, and community service among individuals. In alignment with this noble cause, the Faculty of Nursing, Rama University, organized a blood donation drive on the occasion of International Nurses Week Celebration – 2025.
The blood donation drive was conducted on 7th May 2025 with prior approval from the Medical Superintendent of Rama Hospital and Research Centre. The initiative was led by the Faculty of Nursing as part of their commitment to health and community service. The event was organized under the supervision of the Blood Bank In-Charge of Rama Hospital and Research Centre, along with his team. A total of 88 students and 7 faculty members voluntarily showed interest in donating blood. The screening process was conducted in multiple phases to ensure donor eligibility and safety.
Phase 1: Preliminary Assessment
On 5th May 2025, the first round of screening was carried out by the blood bank team. During this stage, Body Mass Index (BMI) and body weight of the volunteers were assessed. Only those with a normal BMI and a body weight above 50 kg were shortlisted. After this screening, 45 volunteers were found eligible to proceed to the next phase.
Phase 2: Medical Evaluation
The second round of assessment included checking Hemoglobin (Hb) levels and conducting Complete Blood Count (CBC) tests of the 45 shortlisted individuals. Based on the results, donors with Hemoglobin levels above 12 g/dL were considered fit for donation. Out of the 45 individuals, 18 students and 2 faculty members qualified for the final round.
Final Assessment and Blood Donation Day
On the day of the drive (7th May 2025), all eligible donors underwent a final assessment, which included vital signs monitoring and medical history collection to ensure their readiness. The blood donation drive commenced at 10:00 AM at Rama Hospital and Research Centre, conducted under the expert guidance of the blood bank team. A total of 11 individuals successfully donated blood. Following the donation, all donors were provided with certificates of appreciation and refreshments as a token of gratitude.

The event was graced by Dr. Jasmi Johnson, Principal, Faculty of Nursing and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Siddarthamani, who personally congratulated the donors and extended heartfelt thanks for their noble contribution. The program concluded with a vote of thanks to all donors and the dedicated blood bank team for their cooperation and efforts in making the event a success.
