Empowering Communities through Hand Hygiene: Global Hand Washing Day in RU

The Department of Community Medicine at Rama Medical College, Mandhana, Kanpur, organized a sizable event on the occasion of Global Hand Washing Day in an effort to emphasize the crucial significance of hand cleanliness in preventing microbiological infections. Under the direction of the department's head, Dr. Anju Gahlot, this admirable Endeavour came to fruition with the theme "Clean Hands Are Within Reach."
Global Hand Washing Day, a global mandate observed annually on the 15th of October, serves as an international rallying cry. The event underlines the significance of hand hygiene and its profound impact on curtailing the transmission of germs and associated diseases.
The core objectives of the program were both compelling and purposeful:
- The initiative set forth to diminish the number of individuals afflicted with diarrhea through the promotion of correct hand hygiene practices, particularly among at-risk populations.
- An essential component of the campaign was to reduce school absenteeism due to gastrointestinal illnesses, allowing children a more uninterrupted learning experience.
- The program championed hand washing as a measure to reduce the prevalence of respiratory illnesses, such as common colds, across the broader community.
The activities conducted on October 14, 2023, were a testament to the Department of Community Medicine's commitment to fostering awareness and inculcating responsible hand hygiene practices:
- Awareness Campaign: A contingent of students from the 2023 MBBS Batch visited Ramnagar Village, diligently instructing the local community on correct hand washing techniques.
- Practical Demonstrations: Dr. Anju Gahlot delivered a compelling health talk, highlighting the pivotal role of hand washing in disease prevention. Dr. Lakshmi Singh elucidated the World Health Organization's (WHO) hand washing protocols, with the active participation of students from the MBBS Batch 2020 and paramedical students.
In the spirit of community outreach, hand washing procedures were vividly demonstrated in Ram Nagar Village as part of the Family Adoption program. Dr. Aman Kumar, Dr. Poonam Kushwaha, Dr. Nilanjan Dam, Dr. Shreyansh Singh, and MBBS students from the 2023 batch actively engaged with villagers to propagate the tenets of good hand hygiene.
