01 Mar 2023
On February 23rd, 2023, the Department of Periodontology at Rama University's Faculty of Dental Sciences celebrated the first National Periodontist Day. The event was held in commemoration of the registration of the Indian Society of Periodontology under state laws as a non-profit organization in 1975. The primary goal of this organization is to promote and enhance the knowledge and science of periodontology in India.
The day was celebrated by raising awareness among patients about periodontitis, its prevention, and its effects on systemic health. Hygienist students performed a street play, called a "nukkad natak," at various crossroads in and around Rama University, while postgraduate and undergraduate students distributed pamphlets and samples and educated patients. Oral hygiene aids were also distributed.
The program was coordinated by Prof. Dr. Ira Gupta, with department incharge Dr. Hiroj Bagde and Dr. Lynn Johnson involved in the preparation and performance of the "Nukkad Natak." Dr. Shruti Gupta and Dr. Neelam Das were involved in patient education and sample distribution at the outpatient department.
The outcome of the program was increased awareness of periodontal disease, its prevention, and treatment among the general public. In addition, there was an understanding of its effects on systemic health. National Periodontist Day has contributed to the growth of periodontology's knowledge and scientific understanding, which was the primary objective.
