Short Term Course on Dental Radiology

This intensive 7days course (Lectures and clinical component) trains dental interns, postgraduates and dental practitioners in the fundamentals of dental radiography. On successful completion of this course will render the dentist qualified and practically trained to expose radiographs in their practices.
The Dental Radiology Certificate Program will explore the basics of dental radiology, including x-ray physics, characteristics of radiation, the dental x-ray machine, effects of radiation exposure, radiation protection, image receptors, digital radiography, dental radiographic anatomy, and intra and extra-oral radiographic procedures. Students will gain experience exposing digital radiographs and correctly mounting them using a digital mount. This experience will be gained by hands-on exposure on a manikin and hands-on placement on both a manikin and patients. A final laboratory competency consists of exposure and evaluation of a full mouth
The aims of this course are as follows:
- To get an deep insight into the field of dental radiology
- To gain both theoretical and practical knowledge with elaborate radiographic excercises
- To get familiarized and well acquainted to various intraoral and radiologic techniques.
- Successful training in this course will not only be beneficial in clinical dental practice but also will be a great help in obtaining jobs
Curriculum has been designed carefully with help of oral medicine experts, consisting of offline classes and practical exercises divided into 5 modules which will provide comprehensive knowledge of the subject and lab skills.

ELIGIBILITY: Minimum Qualification is a student pursuing BDS (Third year/Final year/Internship), an undergraduate degree in Bachelor of Dental Sciences, a student pursuing or completed MDS, Dental Hygienist, Dental Technician.
COURSEWARE: Course material is provided in printed / electronic form.
MODE: Classroom + Lab.
EVALUATION SYSTEM: A practical assessment exam will be conducted for the enrolled students at the end of the course for 100 marks.(Score at least 40% to pass).

COURSE CONTENT
- Module 1: Concepts of Basic Radiology. (1day, Hours-5hr)
- Module 2: Concepts of various radiographic techniques.(1day, Hours-5hr)
- Module 3: Practical demonstration of various radiographic techniques (INTRA ORAL).(1day, Hours-5hr)
- Module 4: Practical demonstration of various radiographic techniques (EXTRA- ORAL).(2day, Hours-10hr)
- Module 5: Practical exercises done by the registered delegates for the program on patients.(2day, Hours-10hr)
COURSE OUTCOME:
Upon completion of this introductory course in Dental Radiology, each student will be able to:
- Identify normal anatomical landmarks in periapical, bitewing, occlusal, and panoramic radiographs.
- Consistently produce acceptable diagnostic bitewing, periapical, occlusal, and panoramic radiographs.
- Discuss the scientific principles that govern radiographic techniques including radiation physics, radiation characteristics, radiation biology, and radiation safety techniques, including the ALARA principle.
- Appreciate and guard against the dangers of x-radiation.
- List and explain the selection criteria for prescribing dental radiographs.
- Compare and contrast intra-oral and extra-oral radiographs and identify their purposes and uses in dental disease identification.
- Manage dental patients competently during clinical radiographic procedures.
- Determine common radiographic errors that cause poor radiographic quality and be able to correct those errors.
- Describe a diagnostically acceptable radiograph.
- Interpret radiographs and be able to distinguish normal anatomy from oral pathologies, caries, and periodontal diseases.
- List and explain state and federal laws that pertain to the practice of dental radiography.
- Explain the purpose, technique, and benefits of digital radiography.
- Describe the techniques and purpose of using localization techniques in radiology.
CERTIFICATE: Certificate will be provided after completion of the course.
