Admissions to Ph.D. programs at Rama University Kanpur are conducted twice a year. The Ph.D. program is offered in Full time mode and not in a distance learning mode. Hence, coursework, participation in various interactions, submission of progress reports through presentations on Campus, attending conferences, and seminars in the University and outside the University on regular basis is mandatory during the program.

  • Full-time Candidate means a Candidate registered for a Ph.D. devoting full time for completing the requirements of the Program.
  • Ph.D. full-time is for a minimum of 3 years.
  • Ph.D. full-time is for a Maximum of 6 years.

Rama encourages interdisciplinary research and the exchange of ideas and knowledge in various related fields. Consequently, it allows scholars to appoint a Co-Supervisor from outside University as per university rules.

he main Supervisor for the candidate during the Ph.D. program will be from Rama University, appointed as per the research topic and Supervisor availability.

Admission Process

Candidate Category

An Indian national applying for admission to the Ph.D. Program shall apply under one of the categories given below. The Ph.D. mode option (Full time) permitted against each category is also mentioned.

  • Candidates awarded National Fellowships through National Competitive Examinations. (Full-time Registration only)
  • Regular Self-Financed Candidates: students, self-employed or other working/non-working individuals.
  • Sponsored Candidates: Sponsored by Government/Semi-Govt./Private or other bodies through scholarships/fellowships/stipends.
  • Corporate Research Candidates: Employed with reputed Indian organizations with a minimum of 5 years of experience and relevant qualifications.
  • Candidates working in Labs under MoU with the University.
  • JRF/SRF/RA in organizations not under MoU with the University.
  • Working Faculty outside the University: From other institutions with prescribed academic qualifications.
  • Regular Academic Staff of Rama University.
  • Regular Non-Academic Staff of Rama University.
  • NRI/FN/PIO candidates apply under the Foreign Candidate category.

Mode & Duration

  • Ph.D. Program is not offered through distance education.
  • Registrations are Full-time only.
  • Full-time: Candidates must dedicate full time to the program.
  • Minimum duration: 3 years
  • Maximum duration: 6 years

Admission Procedure

  1. Applications are invited through open advertisements for each research domain.
    The University admits Ph.D. candidates only through an Entrance Test conducted by the Doctoral Admissions Committee.
  2. Entrance Test:
    • 50% Research Methodology: Logical Reasoning, Quantitative/ Data Analysis, General Awareness, and English.
    • 50% Subject Specific (MCQs/Short Answers)
  3. Interview/Viva Voce: Candidates must present their research interests to the Faculty Research Committee (FRC), assessing:
    • Research competence
    • Feasibility of research at the University
    • Potential for contributing new knowledge
  4. Merit Score Certificate issued to qualified candidates, valid for two semesters (admission subject to seat availability).
  5. The University may limit admissions based on available resources or facilities.
  6. Exemptions from Entrance Test:
    • Qualified in UGC-NET/JRF, CSIR-NET, SLET, GATE, GPAT, ICAR (ASRB), ICMR, or DST-INSPIRE (within 2 years).
    • M.Phil. holders (admitted through an entrance test).
    • Transfer candidates previously admitted via Ph.D. entrance at another recognized University.

    Note: All exempted candidates must still appear for interview/viva voce before the FRC.
